Transport and Travel

transport and travel

Reducing the impact of the way we move around

In the UK 27% of all carbon emissions are transport related. We cannot reach net zero emissions without major changes in the way we get about as we work, shop, visit friends and family… and travel for holidays.

Use other ways of getting about

  • Cycle and walk
These are two of the most environmentally friendly ways to travel.  Not only are they good for the planet, they’re also good for our health. Choose to cycle or walk to work whenever you can.
  • Use public transport
Trains, buses, and coaches carry a lot more people than cars and are often more sustainable forms of travel.

You can find excellent ideas and information on the brilliant Sustrans website.

We know practical and affordable public transport is not always available in low population rural areas, despite it being a lifeline for many. Surrey County Council is consulting on ways to improve this including increased bus services, charging for transport use, redesigning neighbourhoods for better local services access, reducing the need for car use. Read about their plans here.

Buy an electric car
A ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars comes into effect in 2035. You’ll still be able to buy used petrol and diesel cars, but there’s never been a better time to consider switching to electric sooner rather than later if you possibly can. The RAC has really useful information on this.

Trips and holidays

  • Enjoy staycations: Stick to something close by instead of going to far-flung destinations by plane, trains or coach. Your emissions will be far lower, and you’ll contribute to the community.
  • Fly less: Enjoy European train travel, and let the journey become part of the holiday. Take a look at RailEurope and of course, you’ll find everything you need to know about train options from the superb Man in Seat 61.
And no matter where or how you travel, take an environmentally friendly approach. As well as choosing green accommodation and ethical destinations, you can also think about the tours and attractions you take. Try and walk, cycle, or use public transport, eat local food, leave as light a carbon footprint as possible.
